When, in the wake of her husband's sudden death, the running of the family estate passes to her son, Philip, Veronica Claremont takes herself off to stay with old school friend Julia Nance. Julia runs a guesthouse in north Devon, and Veronica hopes that time away might help her to picture a fresh start.

Along with her other old friend, Isabel, Veronica volunteers to run a canteen van, providing refreshments to British troops  stationed in the area. But when American Major Felix Emerson comes to her rescue one morning when the van won't start, she unexpectedly finds herself invited to a party.

Just as Veronica dares to picture life away from her former home, though, a distressed phone call from Phillip takes her back there, and when she eventually returns to Fairlight, Felix has left on a secret mission.
